Can physical fitness overcome the rigors of age?  Can we back Father Time into a corner?  What happens when a gentle soul like me stumbles into the raucous world of boxing? This week I'm sharing my unexpected fascination with the recent Mike Tyson-Jake Paul showdown and a night of electrifying matches streamed on Netflix. Despite never having been a boxing enthusiast, I found myself cheering for the seasoned Tyson.

With humor and curiosity, I recount the entire evening's experience, from the impressive shape of a 58-year-old Tyson to the streaming hiccups that came with 65 million eager viewers. It's not just about the punches thrown or the titles won; it's a story of promotion, excitement, and the unexpected allure of the boxing ring. Whether you're a seasoned fan or a curious newcomer like me, get ready for an engaging and lighthearted perspective on a night that had the world tuned in and talking.

Tracy:

Don't. Don't get mad at me, but I wanted to see a total knockout. I wanted to see somebody just get the stuffing knocked out of them. Welcome to the Only Child Diaries podcast. I'm your host, racy Wallace. Have you ever felt like you didn't receive the how-to brochure on life, that you didn't get enough guidance about major life issues? So did I. You don't have to be an only child to feel this way. In my podcast, we'll explore some of the best ways to better navigate adulting, while doing so with humor and light. Welcome everyone to the Only Child Diaries podcast.

Tracy:

Today, I'm going to talk about boxing. Yes, boxing. Now, this is not a subject that I would normally talk to you about, or that I would normally talk to anyone about really, but I admit I got caught up in the hype of the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight that was streamed live this week on Netflix. I was actually excited about it. I can't really explain to you why. I've never been a boxing fan. I've never really even watched boxing. I can't recall in my lifetime when I've ever watched maybe a complete boxing match. But this time I not only watched the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight, but I watched what was it all four of the matches that Netflix had that night, including the Katie Taylor Amanda Serrano fight, which, to me, was something of a unique experience. Now, the reason that I want to talk to you about this today is because, well, I'm somewhat haunted by the results and the experience, just in total. I mean, first of all, there was a hard time being completely objective whenever there are two sides right, two teams, two opponents right. So can you guess which side I picked in the Mike Tyson Jake Paul fight? Well, if you picked Mike Tyson, you're right. Why? Because he's older. I was very impressed with the fact that he's 58 years old. He's the old guy, but he's out there. He seems like he's in great shape. I mean, did you see him at the weigh-in? I mean, wow, mike, you're doing a great job, whatever you're doing, and he's overcome a lot of things in his life. I mean, he's really been a great fighter. But he's had some health issues and I thought he looked strong. I mean, he looked like a tank, for gosh sakes, right. Jake Paul, on the other hand, had youth on his side, less than what? Half Mike's age or just about that. A little bit taller, also somewhat built like a tank, maybe not as much experience and certainly he hadn't won as many fights as Mike had.

Tracy:

Now, before we get on to that, let's go back to the Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano fight. I admit I got warmed up with the two preliminary fights, the Barrios-Ramos and the other one. The first one, I can't really recall the names. Now let me just say I'm a gentle soul. I don't like to see people beating each other up in any regard, whether it's physical or emotional. In any regard, whether it's physical or emotional, I think there are better sports that you could pick. But I found the whole thing fascinating. I mean, it was a spectacle. Netflix obviously used it as somewhat of a promotion for some of their shows, aka Cobra Kai and some others, but you know, that may be what it is. It's a Netflix thing, right? Oh, and they also had a lot of issues with the streaming also had a lot of issues with the streaming, understandably, since there were a reported probably 65 million people watching this thing. Whatever they did to promote it, they did a great job, you have to admit that, and there was obviously interest in seeing this.

Tracy:

There were 72,000 people in the arena alone, okay, so Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano came out to fight. One of them was 37. One of them was 38, I believe these two girls. I have never seen two women box each other and this was pretty eye-opening. Amanda got a split um, well, it wasn't a split eye, but it was right over her eyebrow split open and it kept getting more and more split and that was a little hard to watch. I mean, talk about reality TV, right, and the whole team. Every time they'd try to, you know, wipe off the blood and put it looked like petroleum jelly on these wounds. But I mean blood pouring down her face, getting in her eye. What does that feel like? Does it sting? Hard to see, makes it a little tough. But I thought Amanda did a great job. And the judges I mean, how do they judge this? The judges gave it to Katie, which I thought was a real ripoff to Amanda. I'm just saying I don't know anything about it, but there were some boos in the auditorium. I don't think I was alone on that.

Tracy:

So back to Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. Now, jake Paul, he had a lot of extra fluff right Around his entrance. He had the car. I don't know why. He had a bird in a cage. I tried to look it up. I guess it's his pet bird. I mean, okay, you like your bird, I wouldn't take him to an arena with 72,000 people in it. He had the eye candy girlfriend on his arm with the low, low, low cut dress. I hope you can have good conversations with each other, and it was, you know. Does he? Do you really need that? So then Mike comes out and he's just all about Mike. He just walks out and he doesn't need all that right, he's just Mike Tyson.

Tracy:

He came out in the first round really strong and Bill and I were watching and we thought, gosh, he's really gonna, you know, knock Jake Paul out the second round. He was really strong, but then something changed in the third round and it was just kind of like he wasn't, and it was just kind of like he wasn't feeling it anymore, he wasn't trying anymore or he wasn't feeling as strong anymore. I'm not really sure. I'm not an expert and I'm probably not the one to ask, but the rest of the fight was just kind of somewhat of a disappointment. I admit.

Tracy:

I really thought and hoped, of course, that Mike Tyson would win, and I wanted to and don't get mad at me but I wanted to see a total knockout, at least in one of these bouts. Last night I wanted to see somebody just get the stuffing knocked out of them, but that didn't happen and everybody at the end seemed like they were friends, they were professional, they hugged each other, they were supportive, which is nice to see, right. So it's hard to imagine that Mike Tyson, who looked as strong as he did, couldn't have gotten more hits, more punches out on Jake Paul, but in the end Jake was respectful of Mike and they said nice things about each other. So I guess that was a good thing. I guess I guess, but I think I've had my fill of boxing for probably this decade, if not my entire life. Anyway, that's all I've got for today.
