The Brochure on the Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is more than just a game, it's a cultural phenomenon that unites us all, right? So who cares if I actually watch the GAME? This week I'm exploring the allure of the Super Bowl, even for those of us who aren't die-hard football fans. Through the lens of my own experiences, particularly, I reflect on the ritual of gathering with friends and family, the excitement of the pre-kickoff show, and the shared moments that transcend the sport itself. From the dramatic tributes to the entertaining halftime show, this episode captures the spirit of what makes the Super Bowl a beloved event for so many. And hey, it's a great time to go shopping! LOL.

In my podcast, we'll explore some of the best ways to better navigate adulting, while doing so with humor and light. Welcome everyone to the Only Child Diaries podcast. Child Diaries podcast.
Tracy:Today I'm going to talk about sports and the Super Bowl. I'm motivated by the Super Bowl because it happened this week. It's a big sports week for those of you who are sports aficionados. Personally, I don't really enjoy the Super Bowl or football in general. Don't hate me.
Tracy:I enjoy an occasional football game. I'm a USC alum so I like to watch one or two USC college football games per year. I like to see my team win, but in general I don't really enjoy sitting and watching a whole game every week or every other week or every day or however many games there are. I just don't have the patience right. There's a lot to it and really, as a general rule, I don't understand football that well. I don't understand the strategy like I do with baseball. I understand that a lot better and I like to watch baseball. I watch more baseball, as a rule, than football, especially during the season. It's more of a springtime, summer thing and it's more relaxing to me to sit and do something and watch baseball, especially because my husband likes to watch a lot of the Braves games of the Braves games. But we're talking about football and the Super Bowl and I do enjoy somewhat parts of the Super Bowl. I watched the pre-kickoff entertainment and the intro messages, if you will, the pieces from Bourbon Street and the Lady Gaga performance, and I was touched by how they wove together not only the losses the very sad losses in New Orleans, but also the fires here in Los Angeles and the other losses that we've suffered here in the United States, and then the whole thing with Bradley Cooper and Jon Hamm introducing the teams. I thought that was a nice touch and in general I like the Chiefs and the Eagles. I have a special place in my heart for Philadelphia because Bill and I traveled there what was it four or five years ago and we really enjoyed the city a lot and although I'm not, again, a big football fan. I do root for Philadelphia in my heart. Oh, all right, so I didn't see the halftime show yet. I'm going to go back and watch it on YouTube, but I've seen parts of it today on TV and I heard a lot about it.
Tracy:I think that in general, the halftime show is always a big highlight of the game. And, of course, the commercials. I think this year the commercials that I've seen have been well, maybe slightly disappointed. Usually we see the commercials and we're like, oh, it's so clever, right, this year they're clever. Yeah, there's some good ones, but I'm not sure I feel the same way about them.
Tracy:I think, overall, the process and the time that it takes to watch the Super Bowl, the whole experience is really a shared experience with our fellow Americans, whether or not you are a fan of either team, whether or not you are a fan of either team, because it's something that we share as citizens of our country. It's something that we celebrate. It's a big day to come together as friends and family and eat yourself silly, have a couple or more beers and really enjoy your time with the people that you care about. Right, and that's what's important about it. There's been some backlash about some things that happened during the commercials, during the game, during the pregame, postgame, whatever. I don't know. There's always that going on right. I'm not going to comment on any of that. I think there were some things that I wanted to see that happened and some things that I didn't want to see that happened. But I do enjoy all the different parts of it besides the football play, the national anthem, just everything else. But did I watch the whole game? No, I watched the beginning and I watched the end. What did I do in the middle?
Tracy:The dog and I got in the car. We had to go run a couple of errands, and traditionally this is a great time to go run errands. If you've never figured this out, it's a great time to get in the car. There's not as much traffic. If you need to go do something in a traditionally busy store, it's a great time to go, because everybody's home watching tv or everybody's in a bar. Now we tried doing this last year. I thought it would be great to go to Knott's Berry Farm the day of the Super Bowl, and it ended up. There was a lot of traffic getting there, so that didn't work out too well for me, and then when we were first there in the park, it wasn't too bad, but after halftime it got busier, so that also didn't work out too well for me. But some things that I've done in the past years on Super Bowl day was go to the Verizon store, where it was traditionally a long wait to get some help. One year I went in, I just breezed right in no appointment and got everything done lickety split. It's also like going out when well, it used to be, when you'd go out on Oscar night, because everybody would be home watching the Oscars, right, it's not so much like that anymore, because people can watch it another time too.
Tracy:Anyway, don't hate me because I don't watch sports. The only time I really enjoy sports is when I've been in Vegas and I've been betting on it, because then I can really root for my team or the team that I've bet on, rather, and it's a lot more fun if you win. And then, if you don't win, then you've lost money and it's not as much fun. Don't win, then you've lost money and it's not as much fun. I've just never been a big sports person. I do have favorite teams and I like to hear that they won, but I just I don't have the patience to sit through a three or four hour game like every day. I just don't, and I don't get into the personalities and all that stuff. So anyway, but we're done with football for this year and soon it'll be time for spring training for baseball. We'll be on to the regular season and that's kind of exciting because, like I said, I like baseball better.
Tracy:And coming up this week is Valentine's Day. So I hope, whatever you do, you have a great Valentine. If you don't have a special person in your life, maybe you have a special pet, maybe you have a special friend, a girlfriend, same-sex friend, maybe your parents, maybe your aunt, your uncle, somebody that you can wish a happy Valentine's Day to. And if not, just wish yourself a Valentine's Day, a special surprise, a special wish, a special gift. That's what it's all about Love. We have to love each other. Well, folks, that's all I've got for today. Next week we'll tackle another topic together. I hope you'll join me.
