A house can turn into a mini hospital overnight, and nobody warns you how loud adulthood can get. Between the heat, the air conditioner, and an oxygen concentrator running in the background, I’m trying to sleep while my husband recovers at home and medical equipment takes over our normal routines. Then our dog, Brownie, does something she’s never done before: a strange, short bark at three or four in the morning that won’t stop.

At first I’m irritated, because when you’re exhausted, every sound feels personal. But that bark isn’t a random dog moment. It’s an alarm. Brownie is trying to wake me up because something is wrong, and I can barely hear my husband calling over the noise. That tiny interruption becomes a big reminder about caregiving, recovery after a hospital stay, and the way family support can show up when you least expect it, even from a small dog who never planned on a heroic “Lassie” scene.

Brownie And A Hospital Homecoming

Today, I'm gonna tell you a short story about our dog Brownie and how even in the face of difficulty and medical stuff and coming home from the hospital, a small dog, a member of the family, can really shine a light on what's important. Now, if there's some feedback or distraction in the background, it's because it's so freaking hot here that we have the air conditioning on, and I can't get away from that. And I can't get away from the oxygen concentrator from my husband. But let me tell you the story.

The Strange Bark In The Night

When Bill came home, he was sleeping in our bed and he was surrounded by all this medical equipment. And I was sleeping in the next room with the oxygen concentrator, the machine that creates the oxygen, which made a lot of noise. And our dog Brownie was sleeping with me. And I think it was the second night she started barking, this really strange bark. Uh, she woke me up. Finally, it was, I think, three or four in the morning, which she she never does that. And I I started scolding her because sometimes she'll bark at strange things, or sometimes she's just dreaming and she'll she'll squeal or she'll whine, but she's dreaming, right? But this is a strange bark. So anyway, I was telling her to be quiet, be quiet, and she kept barking, but it was a short abbreviated bark, a different bark than I've ever heard. And I kept telling her to be quiet, she kept barking. So finally, over the oxygen concentrator noise, this loud fan kind of thing, I heard my husband yelling for me.

Gratitude, Progress, And A Ask

And I I realized that she was trying to wake me up and alert me that something was wrong. She didn't go so far as to jump over on me and you know, um stick her paws in my face and lick me or anything like a lassie moment, right? But she did wake me up. That was her way of waking me up. She's lazy, I guess. She didn't wanna, she didn't want to get out of her own bed. Um, but she did wake me up. And when I realized what she had done, because she's never done this before, I I uh told her good girl over and over again, and I explained to Bill what she had done. And so she really is um you know a member of the family, and she gets it, just like any of us would, and she understands what needs to be done when it needs to be done. And so for that I'm very grateful. I'm gonna leave you with that because time is short, my energy is short, but things are progressing as they should here, and for that I'm grateful. It's been a lot of work. The heat hasn't helped me any, let me tell you that. Um, but next week, well, we'll tackle another topic together. I hope you'll join me.
